Drinking absinthe shots? Good or bad? There's a picture of a gal called Katie Wright (who?) "necking absinthe shots" in the tabloid press. It seems she had quaffed champagne before "necking" the green fairy.

"Down the hatch ... Katie Wright necks absinthe"

"If she can stand up to all that booze, she can stand up to Alan Sugar."

Has the world gone mad?

The world has gone mad, yes. This is one way of viewing the cultural mayonnaise of the reality TV genre. Absinthe shots are as mad as Alfred Jarry's Ubu (Jarry drank absinthe neat, but probably not by necking a shot)
Fat, ugly, vulgar, gluttonous, grandiose, dishonest, stupid...not Alan Sugar, but Ubu.

Necking! When the fairer sex started drinking absinthe (back in the day) it was considered rather risque. Heaven knows what they would think of modern woman (circa 2012) and all this necking of spirits.

Quite. In olden days, a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking. But now, God knows, anything goes. Good authors too who once knew better words now only use four-letter words. Get out the gramophone and drown out the hubbub of modern life, Nick :-)

Drinking neat absinthe? Must burn, right? Of course it is deeply wrong, absinthe is a concentrate and it needs water to bloom.

High proof and all those alpine meadows jam packed into the distillate...waiting to be liberated. Errrr yes it burns....

I understand that some actually sink a shot of spirit into a beer mug...and then gulp it down. Is it called a sinker or something like that? Not my idea of a pleasant way to spend an evening. This sort of thing is all about getting very drunk. The attraction of that is what?
